Start of a New Year

January 11, 2011

So, yes, I’m writing a New Year’s post a bit late.  But at least I started it on a good date.  So Happy 1/1/11 everyone!

I just wanted to do a quick post on wrapping up last year and mention some things to watch for the coming year.

Recapping 2010

From a tech standpoint, there were a lot of great things that happened last year.  My favorite has to be the release of WP7.  Now I’ve heard a GREAT deal of opinions on the new framework on both sides of the spectrum.  As with all things Microsoft, people tend to either love it or hate it.  So where do I stand? I truly enjoy the platform.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s still v1 and there are tons of things I would like to see fixed or added.  However, I like the direction and I think we will see great things from WP7.  Just don’t expect it to replace the iPhone anytime soon.

Now my favorite tech news for the year was that “Silverlight is DEAD!!”.  You truly have to love the power of social networking.  It took all of what, 20 minutes for that fire to spread.  Well, in case you haven’t heard, Silverlight is not dead and there is a great v5 making coming this year so keep a lookout for that.  (Random thought: Maybe Microsoft should have held a “Fire Stopper” instead of the “Fire Starter”.  Regardless, the event was a great time).

For all of you SharePoint folks out there, SharePoint 2010 is a tremendous step in the right direction.  If you haven’t started to look at it, now would be a great time to start.

I have to admit, I was an ASP.NET MVC skeptic for a while.  So I told a good friend of mine that I would give it a shot on a project I had and I became a believer.  Now I’m not 100% convinced I like going back to some old-school ASP encoding, but the meat of the architecture is solid and I can see where it could lead to a large productivity boost.

During the course of the year I learned a lot and met a lot of great people in the development community.  Better than that, I have a great family with a supporting wife and an awesome set of kids.  Doesn’t get a lot better than that.

Now on to 2011

I started off the year with an incredible e-mail on the morning of Jan 1st.  Microsoft awarded me a Silverlight MVP and, to be honest, I was completely shocked that I received it.  I want to thank, again, the numerous people who helped me obtain the award.  It is truly an honor.

So what does the year hold?  Expect to see some new updates to the WP7 platform.  I don’t know if we are going to get an actual v2, but we should get some good additions early on.  Silverlight 5 will be coming.  Scott Guthrie said to expect the beta the first half of the year with the release the second half.  I like what I have seen so far and can’t wait to get my hands on it.

As far as this blog, well, I have a lot of big plans for it.  I’ve got a series on the PivotViewer that is going to get started in the next few days.  I also have a few surprises coming that you might be interested in.

I wanted to say thanks to all of the people who have helped me over the last year grow within the technical community.  It has been a lot of fun and I look forward to getting more involved and meeting more of you.

I hope the new year finds you and your family happy and healthy.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or thoughts.

Tony
